Japanese Chin Description:
The true origin of the Japanese Chin is being debated. Only purpose for this breed is to be a companion or pet. The Japanese Chin is known as a lapdog and companion dog for the Japanese aristocracy and a favorite among the mperial courts..

Also known as: Japanese Spaniel.


Japanese Chin Appearance:
The Japanese Chin is a lightly built dog. His face is broad with large eyes and the muzzle is upturned.

The Japanese Chin's Weight:
7-9 pounds average


Japanese Chin Grooming/Coat:
Periodic brush and comb your happy Japanese Chin. Special attention should be given to the ears and under the legs. Because their eyes are so large, have a tendency to tear or scratch easily. The face should be occasionally wiped with a damp cloth and the folds cleaned with a cotton swab.

Temperament/Personality:
The Japanese Chin was/is bred to entertain and love people.

The Japanese Chin breed is playful, affectionate, devoted, alert, intelligent and independent. Considered one of the most "cat-like" breeds of dog breeds. He uses his paws to wipe and wash his face. A great companion dog. Very loving and loyal to its owner. Japanese Chins are usually happy to see other people. Some may be somewhat shy of strangers, however.

Often used as therapy dogs because of their loving traits and comfort ability of being in new surroundings.

Usually pretty quiet breed but will bark when strangers or vehicles approach the house.

Can be a very entertaining dog. Japanese Chins like to spin in circles when happy. This has been dubbed, "The Chin Spin."


Families/Children:
The Japanese Chin is great for families. They love to please people and get along with other animals. When socialized properly at a young age and well treated, the dog can easily be the best companion dog you will ever have.

Japanese Chin Living Environment:
An apartment, condominium or small home is fine for the Japanese Chin as long as given ample opportunity for good physical and mental exercise. If you live in a hot environment, an air-conditioned home is highly recommended as this breed can overheat easily.

Japanese Chin Health:
The flat face of the Japanese Chin does make it difficult for him to breath and has been known to contribute to heart issues. Hot environments are to be avoided as they can overheat easily. The Japanese Chin is a "brachycephalic" breed.

The Japanese Chin can also have allergies.

Can overheat easily in warm environments.

May require that their anal glands be periodically expressed.

A very good diet is important for the Japanese Chin to help avoid allergies and skin issues. Avoid anything with corn.
