Irish Terrier Description:
The origin of the Irish Terrier is not known for sure. It is thought to have descended from terrier-type dogs in Ireland or England.

Also known as: Irish Red Terrier.

Irish Terrier Appearance:
The Irish Terrier is a fairly tall breed. His head is long and decorated with a bearded muzzle, bushy eyebrows and mustache. The small ears are triangular and fold forward. The long tail is usually docked and erect.

The Irish Terrier's weight:
13-15kg

Irish Terrier Grooming/Coat:
When groomed properly, the Irish Terrier coat will protect the dog from rain and cold. A properly cared-for Irish Terrier does not shed either. The wiry coat is fairly easy to groom, pet dogs (rather than show dogs) needing stripping only once or twice a year.

Temperament/Personality:
The Irish Terrier is a very active breed. This breed is very comfortable relaxing in the house and at the same time can be "activated" and play hard outside. Good socialization and firm training by a knowledgeable master is very important for this breed. If absent, lack of master respect and aggression towards people and other animals could be a problem.

Irish Terriers have a strong guarding instinct and make good watchdogs. They often attempt dominance with other dogs. Poorly socialized dogs can start fights with minimal, if any, provocation.

Families/Children:
Irish Terriers are good with people. Most Irish Terriers love children and tolerate rough-housing to a certain extent. Irish terriers are not always the best choice of dog, as they are very energetic and sometimes challenging to train. It is important that they have a strong leader, for whom they have natural respect.

Irish Terrier Living Environment:
Irish Terriers can do well in an apartment, condominium or small home. What is important is early socialization, consistent training, daily exercise and mental stimulation will help make this a happy and a quality companion.

Irish Terrier Health:
Irish Terrier is a generally healthy breed. A low incidence of hip dysplasia.

Irish Terrier Life Span:
13 – 14 years

Origin of Irish Terrier :
Ireland

Uses/Employment:
The Irish Terrier was used as:
vermin eradicator

Competitions/Sports:
The Irish Terrier can compete in:
agility
show
Lure Coursing
sea rescue

Irish Terrier Needs:
A happy and healthy Irish Terrier needs to be well-treated, given lots of exercise, room to run and your life-long affection.

Mike:Friday July 8th 10:41 am
We have a male Irish Terrier about 7 years old. In the last year or so, he has on several occasions attacked a family member, generally when they have walked close to him when he is laying down. He desists after 30 seconds or so, but it is frightening. It is becoming more of a problem and is clear it is not just a question of him being startled while sleeping. Have others had this problem? I do not see evidence of it as a general issue in the breed. Thank you.
