Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Description:
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is also known as Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund or Grand Bouvier Suisse.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large breed who originated in the mountain villages and farms of the Swiss Alps. This breed was used for draft work and cattle droving for hundreds of years.

It is larger than the other above Sennenhunds. Thought to be descended from ancient Mastiffs who probably arrived there thanks to the Romans. Some think the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog played a role in the development of the Saint Bernard.


Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Appearance:
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large, very muscular dog. His head is broad with a deep chest and the body is somewhat elongated. Ears are medium, pendant and triangular and a long tail.

The Greater Swiss Mountain dog weighs:
Male 100 to 130 lb (45 to 59 kg)
Female 80 to 110 lb (36 to 50 kg)


Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Grooming/Coat:
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog coat is double-layered and dense but requires minimal grooming. This breed does shed throughout the year with a major shedding annually. Having said this, a weekly brushing and occasional bath is recommended.

Temperament/Personality:
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is an intelligent breed and is a quick learner. This breed loves people and children (very gentle with children) and are very sociable. Even though they confident and comfortable in unfamiliar locations and surroundings, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is quick to sound the alarm if there is something not quite right. He is very willing to stand his ground and protect something or someone.

They love to try to eat anything, doesn't matter if it is edible or not. Even though they are eager to please, can be very stubborn.

Like to take long naps after a burst of physical activity.


Families/Children:
Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs love people and are gentle with children! They are sociable, active, calm and dignified. They crave attention and physical contact.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Living Environment:
Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs will not do well in an apartment, condominium or very small home. They need to get out and get a lot of exercise. Mental stimulation is also very important. This is a pretty smart breed. Kenneling is definitely not recommended.
