German Shepherd Description:
The German Shepherd was developed to herd and guard sheep. They are highly intelligent, responsive and versatile. Originated in Germany as a herding dog. The German Shepherd was first shown in 1882. Today, only the short-haired German Shepherd is generally shown. The color white is considered a disqualifying factor.

White German Shepherds are decreasing in Europe but are actually increasing in North America. Some authorities feel the white German Shepherd is a distinct breed. They are called the American White Shepherd or just White Shepherd.

German Shepherds are in the top 5 of most popular and familiar dog breeds in the United States.


German Shepherd Appearance:
The German Shepherd is described as a large muscular dog with a slight elongated body, muzzle is long also a long and bushy tail. Ears are also large, erect and somewhat triangular.

German Shepherd weight:
Male 30–40 kilograms (66–88 lb)
Female 22–32 kilograms (49–71 lb)

German Shepherd height:
Male 60–65 cm (24–26 in)
Female 53–60 cm (21–24 in)


German Shepherd Grooming/Coat:
The German Shepherd coat is dense and may be short or long. This coat sheds heavily in the warmer seasons. He also sheds constantly throughout they year. Daily brushing is recommended to eliminate hair in the home. As with all breeds, periodically check ears and clip nails.

The German Shepherd colors are black and tan and some may be white.


Temperament/Personality:
German Shepherds are very confident and active dogs. This breed wants to have a purpose and is very eager to learn. German Shepherds bond well with people they know and are very loyal. If not properly socialized, the German Shepherd, however, can become overly protective of property, territory and family.

More recent research has shown that German Shepherds respond much better with positive reinforcement training verses a stern hand approach.


Families/Children:
When well socialized as a puppy, continuously socialized throughout life, given daily exercise and receives a healthy daily dose of mental stimulation, the German Shepherd can be a fantastic family dog and companion. As with many breeds of this size and nature, the German Shepherd should not be left alone with children.

German Shepherd Living Environment:
A small home, apartment or condominium may be okay for the German Shepherd as long as he receives the necessary exercise and mental stimulation.

German Shepherd Health:
Inbreeding of the German Shepherd has caused some health issues:
hip dysplasia
elbow dysplasia
arthritis
degenerative spinal stenosis
ear infections
bloat

The UK Kennel Club first registered the breed in 1919.

The breed was named Deutscher Schäferhund by Von Stephanitz, literally translating to "German Shepherd Dog".
