Chihuahua Description:
Spanish: Chihuahueño Named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico.

Named after the Mexican province where it is thought that it may have originated, the Chihuahua is amongst the oldest breeds in the Americas and the smallest dog in the world.

It ancestor is believed to date back to an ancient breed, known to the Mayans as the Techichi, the descendants of which may have later been crossed with hairless dogs of Mexican or Asian origin or other small dogs who were or are native to Central and South America. This breed can come in long and short coats. It is thought that the long-haired variety was developed by the further introduction of Pomeranian, Papillon and Yorkshire Terrier blood.

Chihuahua Appearance:
The Chihuahua is a very small dog. He has a rounded head and short pointed muzzle. The eyes and ears are large and the long tail is carried over the back.

Long-coat and the smooth-coat (or short-hair) are two types of the Chihuahua. The "Taco Bell" dog.

Chihuahua's weight:
Male Under 6 pounds (Under 3 kilograms)
Female Under 6 pounds (Under 3 kilograms)

Chihuahua Grooming/Coat:
Long-coat and the smooth-coat (or short-hair) are two types of the Chihuahua. Long-haired Chihuahuas are actually smoother to the touch, having soft, fine guard hairs and a downy undercoat, which gives them their fluffy appearance. The long-hair typically sheds less than the short-hair and requires very minimal grooming.

Can also be found in a whole variety of colors:

Temperament/Personality:
Very loyal to one particular owner. Has a tendency to be over protective of this owner around strangers and other animals. Prefer to be with other Chihuahuas than other breeds. Usually do not get along with other breeds.

Usually not suitable for families who are always on the move or lack patience as they are easily provoked into attack mode.

Don't let this dog think it is the pack leader of the family. A common mistake is that humans have a tendency to "baby" the Chihuahua because of its size. This can lead to future unwanted anti-social behaviors.

Crave attention and affection. Can be easy to please but also very hyper. Known to bark a lot or be yappy. This can be corrected with proper training.

These little creatures love their dens. Chihuahuas love to burrow into pillows, blankets, anything especially if soft. They love to go deep and into the darkness where they believe it is safe.

Families/Children:
If you really want a Chihuahua and have children, immediate socialization as a puppy is a must.

Chihuahua can be easily provoked and attack, especially small children and small pets.

Chihuahua Living Environment:
Chihuahuas typically do well in an apartment, condominium or a small home. They like warmth so you might find them sunning themselves by a window on a bright day. Chihuahuas do not like the cold very much. Even though small, Chihuahuas still need a fair amount of daily exercise and mental stimulation.

Chihuahua Health:
Chihuahuas have moleras, or a soft spot in their skulls, and they are the only breed of dog to be born with an incomplete skull. The molera fills in with age, but great care needs to be taken during the first six months until the skull is fully formed. Some veterinarians are not familiar with Chihuahuas as a breed, and mistakenly confuse a molera with hydrocephalus.

Other health issues which can affect the Chihuahua:
epilepsy
hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar
seizure disorders
prone to eye infections
dental issues
luxating Patella
heart murmurs
Pulmonic Stenosis

Can be easily poisoned because of its size. Chocolate tends to be a common poison for this breed. Do not overfeed!

Chihuahua Life Span:
10-18 years

Chihuahua Litter Size:
About 4 little ones

Origin of Chihuahua :
State of Chihuahua in Mexico

Competitions/Sports:
The Chihuahua can compete in:

show

Chihuahua Needs:
A happy and healthy Chihuahua needs to be well-treated, given lots of exercise, room to run and your life-long affection.

The Taco Bell dog.

Chihuahua History:
Chihuahuas are considered to be the oldest breed on the American continent. Holy to pre-Columbian Indian nations and used for rituals. The upper class at the time also had them as pets. The breed was discovered in Mexican State of Chihuahua and this is how it was thought to have derived its name.
