Bedlington Terrier Description:
The Bedlington Terrier is named after the town of Bedlington, Northumberland in North East England. May have helped in the development of the Kerry Blue Terrier breed.

This is a hardy and unusually long-lived breed.

Originally known as: Rothbury Terrier and Rodbery Terrier.


Bedlington Terrier Appearance:
The Bedlington Terrier has a lamb-like appearance. He is long-legged and lean. His back is arched with a sloping head that is narrow.

The Bedlington Terrier's weight:
18-22lb (8-10kg)


Bedlington Terrier Grooming/Coat:
The Bedlington Terrier's coat is dense with a woolly appearance. This gives the breed a sheep-like look. A visit to the professional groomer about every 4 to 8 weeks is recommended for the Bedlington Terrier. Daily brushing and combing is also necessary to keep the coat in beautiful shape.

Colors: blue, black and tan, sandy and liver.


Temperament/Personality:
The Bedlington Terrier is very smart and is always waiting for orders from its owner. One of the most calm, reliable and loyal terrier breeds. Good natured with mild manners. Very fast.

Bedlington Terriers love to solve problems and are very good with family. Some Bedlington Terriers may have separation anxiety. Please keep this in mind if your lifestyle takes you away from the home for extended periods of time.


Families/Children:
The Bedlington Terrier is eager to please practically anyone who will give him attention. He makes a great companion and family addition as long as he receives proper treatment, is well socialized, gets enough daily exercise and mental stimulation.

Bedlington Terrier Living Environment:
Bedlington Terriers can do very well in apartments, condominiums and small homes as long as he received a daily dose of quality exercise and mental stimulation. When these are missed, he can become somewhat destructive in the home.

Large running areas will make the Bedlington Terrier happy.


Bedlington Terrier Health:
Bedlington Terriers historically had an unusually high incidence of copper toxicosis, an inherited autosomal recessive disease, characterized by accumulation of excess copper in the liver. Genetic testing is now available, and the disease has been largely eradicated from the Bedlington population in the United States. Active disease (rather than inheritance) is diagnosed with a liver biopsy. It is essential that anyone interested in purchasing a Bedlington is provided with proof of the dogs' unaffected status. All reputable breeders will be able to provide you with proof of DNA or biopsy testing of the parents. Wikipedia
