The Basenji belongs to the hound and sight hound groups. It has been used in packs to hunt game such as antelope, monkeys and small wild cats. The Basenji can locate its prey by sight and smell. This breed is pretty fearless and, to protect the little puppies, is known to attack big cats who may be attempting to find a meal.

The Basenji produces an unusual yodel-like sound commonly called a "barroo", due to its unusually shaped larynx.
