Australian Shepherd or Aussie Description:
The Australian Shepherd dog actually originated in the United States that was developed from herding breeds of European origin. Many of these dogs were exported to America and Australia during the 19th centur.

The Australian Shepherd dog was initially used for herding sheep on farms and ranches because they are so hardworking and intelligent.

Australian Shepherd or Aussie Appearance:
The Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized solidly built herding dog. The ears are triangular and are high on the head.

Australian Shepherd 's Weight:
Male 50–65 lb (23–29 kg)
Female 40–55 lb (18–25 kg)

Australian Shepherd or Aussie Grooming/Coat:
Australian Shepherds or Aussies need periodic bathing, minimal clipping. Coat is medium-length with slighly feathered legs and short tail.

Temperament/Personality:
Because Australian Shepherds are so energetic, they require a lot of exercise, mental stimulation and attention. This breed loves to be busy. Doesn't matter what he is doing as long as he is busy. The Australian Shepherd is creative and intelligent and if there isn't an assigned activity, he will make a game to entertain himself.

Although the Australian Shepherd is not considered an excessive barker, this breed will let you know when there is something different.

Love lots of human interaction. Because they love being very close to their masters, they have been given the nickname, “Velcro.” Can be a great family dog but the owner should be aware that if left alone, there is a real possibility that this dog will engage in destruction.

Australian Shepherds are often used as herders and because they have the ability to adapt to various animals and situations, their assignment can be farm or commercially raised animals such as ducks, rabbits, and geese.

Families/Children:
The Australian Shepherd or Aussie might be a good family dog as long as the family realizes this breed is a high energy breed and requires a lot of attention, training and exercise and has lots of outdoor space to run. May tend to nip at your heels because of its instinct to herd.

Australian Shepherd or Aussie Living Environment:
Australian shepherds require 2-3 hours a day of exercise, play and mental stimulation. If they don't get this, this breed can be extremely destructive.

An apartment, condominium or small home is absolutely not recommended for the Australian shepherd. They do much better in a ranch, farm or a home with lots of acreage.

Australian Shepherd or Aussie Health:
Unfortunately there are many inherited health issues that can affect the Australian shepherd. This can include hip, back, and vision. Epilepsy is also a concern.
