The Appenzeller Sennenhund is one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps.

Original breed name, most popular English version of the breed name:
Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
Berner Sennenhund, Bernese Mountain Dog
Appenzeller Sennenhund, Appenzeller
Entlebucher Sennenhund, Entlebucher Mountain Dog

Weight:
49-70 lbs (22-32 kg)


Appenzeller Sennenhund Grooming/Coat:
The coat of the Appenzeller Sennenhund is easy to care for. Minimal grooming required.

Temperament/Personality:
Appenzeller Sennenhunds should be socialized early in life with other dogs and people. Regular activity and praise training also recommended if they are to be safely kept as a pet. Appenzeller Sennenhunds are lively, high spirited, and suspicious of strangers.

Appenzeller Sennenhund can learn commands and appropriate behavior early because of their high level of intelligence. Firm training along with positive reinforcement usually works best. Appenzeller Sennenhunds work on the "pack" system. If you fail to show you are the pack leader, a lot of problems can occur. The Appenzeller Sennenhund requires a strong master and pack leader.


Families/Children:
When socialized early (as a puppy) the Appenzeller Sennenhund can be a great family addition.

Appenzeller Sennenhund Living Environment:
Apartments, condominiums or small homes are not recommended for the Appenzeller Sennenhund. They require a lot of physical and mental exercise. A large fenced-in yard or acreage is best.

The Appenzeller Sennenhund is considered a fairly healthy breed.

12-13 years
