American Staffordshire Terrier Description:
American Staffordshire Terriers tend to be confused with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed.

Weight:
57-67 pounds (25-30 kg)


American Staffordshire Terrier Grooming/Coat:
Good brushing once per week. When start to smell, a bath will be necessary. Trim your American Staffordshire Terrier's nails once every two weeks.

Temperament/Personality:
This is a very intelligent, human-oriented, active dog and an affectionate family pet. Careful breeding of the American Staffordshire Terrier has produced a friendly, trustworthy dog who is considered good with children.

Like to be couch potatoes.

Easy to train. Learn very quickly. Basic obedience training recommended.

Can be made to be a guard dog using their natural guarding instinct.


Families/Children:
American Staffordshire Terrier are usually wonderful with children.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is considered a healthy breed.

There are a few inherited health issues to consider:
canine hip dysplasia (OFA rank: 21; normal 71.7%, abnormal 26.0%)
Congenital heart disease (OFA rank: 11; normal 95.1%, abnormal 1.6%)
Elbow dysplasia (OFA rank: 12; normal 81.4%, abnormal 17.8%)
Luxating patella knee complication that imparts a bow shape to the leg (OFA rank: 72; normal 98.7%, abnormal 1.3%)
Minor incidence of other conditions, such as senior ataxia and hereditary cataracts
Thyroid dysfunction (OFA rank: 19, normal 80.0%, abnormal 8.0%)

May also be vulnerable to:

urinary tract infections (UTI)
autoimmune diseases
Spondylosis
osteoarthritis

American Staffordshire Terrier Needs:
A happy and healthy American Staffordshire Terrier needs to be well-treated, given lots of exercise, room to run and your life-long affection.

American Staffordshire Terrier History:
Brought to the US where they were made into a show dog. Also used for fighting bears and does have a history of dog fighting.

Our Gang children acquired an American Pit Bull Terrier with a ring around his eye; originally named "Pansy", the dog soon became known as Pete the Pup, the most famous Our Gang pet and one of the first registered Stafford Terriers.
