American Eskimo Description:
The American Eskimo is a member of the Spitz family and is NOT from Alaska. First recognized as a breed in 1913.

American Eskimo Appearance:
There are three size varieties of the American Eskimo breed,
the toy
miniature
standard

Weight:
Toy: 6-10 pounds (2.4-4.5kg)
Miniature 10-20 pounds (4.5-9kg)
Standard: 18-35 pounds (8kg-16kg)

American Eskimo Grooming/Coat:
The American Eskimo should be brushed and/or combed twice a week. Do shed twice a year.

If you live in a warm or hot climate, shaving may be recommended at the beginning of the season. If you do this, be sure to keep him out of the sun or use a recommended lotion so the American Eskimo does not get sun burn.

Temperament/Personality:
American Eskimos make great house and companion dogs. Love being a part of a family. They are highly intelligent, eager to please, loyal, very active, have lots of energy, and moderately independent.

The American Eskimo is known for being a "fear biter." Strangers need to let the American Eskimo know him first before attempting to pet. Very unlikely to bite a family member unless ill treated.

Make excellent watch dogs as they like to bark announcing approaching strangers and cars. Can be an excessive barker and will experience separation anxiety when you are away.

Families/Children:
The American Eskimo may not be a good choice for a family with small children. More fitting for an older couple or family with mature age children. Suffers from separation anxiety. Keep this in mind if your daily routine takes you away from the home often and for long periods of time.

American Eskimo Living Environment:
A consistently cool environment is recommended as the American Eskimo really likes cold climates. May overheat if too warm.

American Eskimo Health:
Testing should be considered before getting an American Eskimo. There are some genetic issues with a portion of the breed. This is very uncommon as this breed is generally very healthy, however as stated, some dogs in this line do have problems.

Some health issues may be:
PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)
luxating patella
hip dysplasia
dental issues

Can easily become overweight.

American Eskimo Life Span:
12-15 years

Origin of American Eskimo :
Germany

Uses/Employment:
The American Eskimo has been employed in the following areas:
guard dog
drug detection

Competitions/Sports:
The American Eskimo can compete in the following:
obedience trials

American Eskimo Needs:
Should be well socialized starting as a puppy to curb behavioral issues. Obedience training is also recommended.

A happy and healthy American Eskimo needs to be well-treated, given lots of exercise, room to run and your life-long affection.

American Eskimo History:
The American Eskimo became well known and popular in America as a circus performer with Barnum & bailey. This breed was the first to walk a tightrope.
