American Cocker Spaniel Description:
The American Cocker Spaniel is a type of sporting dog who is closely related to the English Cocker Spaniel.

The American Cocker Spaniel is also known as: Cocker Spaniel (in USA), Cocker, Merry Cocker

This breed was developed from English Cocker Spaniels that were exported to North America during the 19th century.

Was mainly used for hunting and retrieving birds such as quail and woodcock but now is seen more as a family and companion dog.


American Cocker Spaniel Appearance:
The American Cocker Spaniel is a medium sized dog with long silky fur that hangs on the legs and belly. The nose turns up with down turned ears.

The American Cocker Spaniel's weight:
Height: 13.5 to 15.5 inches
Weight: 24 to 33 lb

The merle gene is actually a gene that controls color.


American Cocker Spaniel Grooming/Coat:
If properly groomed and cared for, the American Cocker Spaniel is a very beautiful dog.

Colors: black/black and tan, any solid color other than black (ASCOB), and parti-color.


Temperament/Personality:
The American Cocker Spaniel is mainly a companion dog and not used much for hunting anymore. This breed is lively and playful and makes a popular family pet.

Very outgoing and friendly. Very trainable and smart.


Families/Children:
American Cocker Spaniels are good with families and children. Very outgoing. Socialize early.

American Cocker Spaniel Living Environment:
Outdoors for exercise. Can live in an apartment, condominium or small home if walked twice daily or allowed to run in a "dog run." Quality mental stimulation is also a must!

American Cocker Spaniel Health:
American Cocker Spaniels are generally a healthy breed but when they were very popular in the past, backyard breeders and puppy-mills damaged the health. This is slowly being corrected.

American Cocker Spaniels are susceptible to a variety of illnesses, particularly infections affecting their ears and, in some cases, their eyes.

glaucoma
cataracts
hemolytic anemia (AIHA)
luxating patellas
hip dysplasia
dilated cardiomyopathy
sick sinus syndrome

Brought to England from Spain where they were developed into a hunting dog hunting small game such as the woodcock, a small bird. Brought to America on the Mayflower in 1620. First registered in 1878 with the American Kennel Club. In 1946 was recognized as a distinct breed.
