The American Akita from the mountainous northern regions of Japan.

Weight:
Males 100-130 lb (45–59 kg)
Females 70-100 lb (32–45 kg)


American Akita Appearance:
Black mask but some now have a white mask or no mask at all.

American Akita Grooming/Coat:
The American Akita should only have a weekly brushing. Coat very easy to look after. No special grooming tools just a brush.

They do loose entire coat (including undercoat) once a year. During this time you should be constantly brushing. You will typically get one or more garbage bags full.


Temperament/Personality:
The American Akita has a combination of dignity, courage, alertness, and devotion to its family. It is extraordinarily affectionate and loyal with family and friends. They are very protective of its property, and can be reserved with strangers.

The American Akita is not a breed for everyone. It is large and powerful. They typically have a strong independent streak that can make them challenging in obedience activities. They thrive on the love and respect of its master and, with constant reinforcement training and a little creativity, can be a very good worker. Generally quiet and not prone to nuisance barking. An ideal house dog.

The American Akita may be aggressive towards other dogs and animals, especially ones they don't know, so caution is recommended.

Loves his master.


Families/Children:
American Akitas are very affectionate around friends and family as long as raised around them as a puppy.

Not recommended for the novice owner.
