Affenpinscher Description:
The Affenpinscher is also known as: Affen, Affie, Monkey Dog.

With his monkey-like face, in Germany, he is also known as the "Monkey Terrier" and in France, he is known as the "Diablotin Moustachu" or moustached little devil. His original purpose was to eradicate rats.


Affenpinscher Appearance:
The Affenpinscher is a small terrier with a rounded head and eyes. The muzzle is blunt with long facial hair. Many dock the ears and tail.

Affenpinscher's Weight:
6.5–13.2 lb (2.9–6.0 kg)


Affenpinscher Grooming/Coat:
People believe that the Affenpinscher does not shed. They do loose hair and it will depend on time of year. Frequent grooming recommended for the Affenpinscher with light brushing.

Colors: Black, grey, silver, red, black and tan, or belge (mixed black, white, brown and red hairs), all with or without black mask


Temperament/Personality:
Affenpinschers are very fun-loving and playful but can also be stubborn. They love adventure and are curious about anything. They love and are affectionate towards all family members and will protect them if think the situation is threatening. This breed has no fear when threatened or attacked and will not have difficulty responding. Otherwise, the Affenpinscher is mostly a quiet dog but can make a good watchdog.

This breed is territorial and will not want to share his food or toys, especially with other dogs or small children.

May have difficulty with housebreaking. Firm training is recommended.


Families/Children:
The breed is confident, lively, affectionate towards family members and is also very protective of them and will defend them if he feels the situation is threatening. Affenpinschers love being with its family.

Affenpinschers are somewhat territorial when it comes to their toys and food, so they are not recommended for very small children


Affenpinscher Living Environment:
The Affenpinscher should do well in an apartment, condominium or small home. Daily mental stimulation is important.

collapsed trachea
Cataracts are occasionally reported
