Dog Food

Feeding your puppy with the right food and diet and a bowl of clean water is one of the most important things you can do for him or her.

Set a regular feeding schedule and stick to it. High quality and premium foods are so important. “Economy” foods are typically so inferior. They lack the protein sources and important vitamins and minerals a growing puppy desperately needs. Economy brands can also be misleadingly expensive in the long run since they are often less filling. Your hungry puppy will end up eating more.

When buying food, take your dog’s age, weight and size into consideration.

Feed your puppy the same type and brand of food every day. Unlike humans, a puppy/dog digestive system cannot handle quick changes in food. It can cause an upset stomach and diarrhea. When switching to a new food gradually transition him to a new food by mixing portions of both foods until you slowly phase the old food out.

A puppy usually eats a lot of food. From birth up to six months of age, he'll need to eat two to four times as much as an adult dog to support all that growth. A good rule of thumb is that after his first week of life, when his weight doubles from what it was at birth, a puppy should gain one to two grams per pound of anticipated adult weight each day. This means that if your German Shepherd puppy weighs 75 pounds as an adult, he should gain three to five ounces per day as a puppy. Keep an eye on your puppies’ size. When you pet your puppy, feel his ribs. If there is a lot of “cushion” there, perhaps reducing the amount of food available is necessary.

When your puppy is six months old you should reduce the amount of food available to him. Yes...this does include treats!

Remember:
- Keep fresh Drinking water available at all times. Change the water at least once per day, more for dogs who drool.
- Keep food and water bowls clean.
- Don't overfeed your dog.
- Monitor your dog's weight and activity level, and make feeding adjustments as necessary.

Self-feeder systems can be great for some puppies but we recommend if you use one, monitor your puppy’s growth very closely. You should consider a regular feeding schedule if he becomes overweight or eliminates in the house. With love, commitment and proper care, your pet will grow up safe and healthy and will enrich every aspect of your life. May you enjoy every moment that you share with your new best friend!

AAFCO
(Association of American Feed Control Officials) sets nutrient standards for growth. Many companies go beyond those standards. Many test their products to be sure they properly support your puppies’ development. Some, however, only meet the minimum of standards.
