Dog Buddy/Rescue

Rescue Buddy:
Rescue Buddies are dogs who are teamed up with human volunteers or are paid. These dogs might otherwise be euthanized because at the moment they are considered unacceptable for adoption. They may have a problem with constant elimination in the house, be overly aggressive, not be social or have some other negative behavior.

The humans typically take the dog into their home and attempt to create a positive bond. During this process, the human, using positive reinforcement, will teach the dog proper and acceptable manners, give the dog sufficient exercise and make the dog feel safe and comfortable.

The Buddy Program is designed to help dogs face their specific challenges and to get them ready for adoption. Many times the human buddies will buy toys, bedding, chewable items and treats for their dog. When the dog is adopted, the human buddy usually accepts another dog to work with and the process starts again.

Human buddies are wonderful. It can be both sad and rewarding. Rewarding in that they see their dog improve and eventually get adopted, sad in that the dog leaves. It takes a lot of time and effort to establish a bond with the dog, love the dog and then see the dog leave to live with someone else.

K-9 Buddy Program:
The K-9 Buddy Program is designed for children who are blind or have some visual impairment. A dog is carefully matched with the child and the bonding process begins. Studies have shown a significant improvement in the child’s self-esteem. The dog provides companionship and allows the child to be somewhat responsible for the dog’s care.

Additional positive results have been:
- Motivating the child to learn
- Motivating the child to socialize more
- Motivating the child to get more exercise
- The child’s sensory development has improved in some cases

A K-9 Buddy is usually available free of charge.

To get involved in the Rescue Buddy or K-9 Buddy program, contact your local animal shelter or research this topic online.

Considerations

Your current or future puppy should look at you as the "pack" leader. The more fun and rewarding activities you allow him to experience the better his life will be. A well-trained, well-socialized puppy should become a great dog, one to be proud of and one who will be at your side for life!

Housetraining:
One of the first things you will want to train your pet is to not relieve himself inside the home unless you have a designated area for him to do so. Puppies usually need to eliminate more than older dogs so the sooner you teach him the better. Training a puppy is usually easier than training a dog but this will still take time and patience.
Take your puppy outside often. When your puppy eliminates, let him know he did something great! Pet him, say, "good puppy, good puppy!" and lavish him with praise maybe even a treat!

Keep in mind; you WILL be cleaning up messes in the house until your puppy learns what, when and where to go.

Socialization:
Allow him to socialize with other animals and people if possible. The more positive experiences he has with people of all ages and other animals such as cats, the more likely he will accept them during his life. Take your puppy to a park and, if possible and safe, allow him to be petted by strangers who will approach.

Mental Stimulation:
Keep you puppy active! Give him things to do. This can be as simple as playing with a toy or a little more complicated like fetching a Frisbee. Allow him an easy way to look out the window and watch the world when inside.
- Dog parks
- Long walks

Give lots of love:
Always talk kindly to your puppy. Pet him and rub his tummy. Maybe snuggle up while watching television or reading a book. Dogs need lots of love and your kindness.
