Attention and Care

Hopefully you got your puppy because you love animals. To have a happy and healthy puppy you must give this puppy lots of quality attention, love and care. Remember, your dog is a social animal and needs companionship and love. This animal will require nourishment, medial care, lots of exercise and a happy and safe environment. The following tips will help you develop a long-lasting affectionate bond between you and your pet.Attention and love"

- Attention:No matter the breed, color or age, your pet requires attention. Light scratch behind the ears and under the chin are typical favorites. "They also will get to know your happy and mad face. Be sure to smile and talk softly to your pet at all times. Loud angry voices will make your pet fear you!

- Grooming can be a loving part of your care. This is also important for the health of your puppy especially breeds who grow hair instead of fur. Keep nails at appropriate lengths. Careful, you can injure your dog if you cut nails too short. If possible, ask a professional to show you how the first time. Check ears and eyes for dirt and goop. Clean if necessary using a soft wet towel or washcloth. If you feel adventurous, brush your puppy’s teeth often.

- Exercise: Can’t stress exercise enough. Different breeds require different levels of exercise. Exercise includes in-house tug-of-war with a toy to walks around the block to running free in a leash-free park. I’m lucky enough to live on 3 acres. I train my puppies to stay in the yard. Once this is learned, I allow them to run.

- Training: Training can take time but the results will make a great pet who will obey you, not be destructive and respect you.

- Socializing Socializing your puppy with other dogs and people is so important. Allow your puppy to experience the wonders of life. Don't just keep him inside the home or the backyard. Good socializing also makes it safer for visitors who come to your home.

- Veterinarian: Visit your veterinarian at least annually. Watch your pet for unusual signs. Because your pet can’t speak (except bark) your pet can’t tell you directly when he is not feeling well. Is your pet drinking a lot less water? Has your pet not voided for a long time? Is your pet shaking? Is your pet acting differently? Look for our vet page.

- Sanitize: Keep your yard free of puppy droppings. If your puppy sleeps in a contained area (box or crate), please keep it clean.

- Ample exercising
- Attention/Socializing
- Mental Stimulation
- Diet. Some dogs require a specialized diet. Quality food.
- Spaying/Neutering
- Vaccinations/Health care
- Vet visits

Crate: If you absolutely must use it, don’t place your pet in a crate/carrier for long periods of time. You pet needs to move around (get exercise) just like you do. If you must, please only during transporting your pet, during the pet’s sleep periods and for the safety of your pet and guests.

Spaying and Neutering:
If the purpose of having a pet is primarily for companion purposes, you may want to consider spaying or neutering your pet. There are far too many dog, cats, gerbils, hamsters and other unwanted “pets” without homes. Nationwide shelters are overcrowded and under financed. If you don’t want your pet to have his or her own little ones, consider this procedure. If you decide to proceed, this should be done within the first six months (more or less) of the pet’s life."Neutering a dog can offer additional benefits. They typically become less aggressive and territorial. Neutering also can prevent some cancers such as prostrate cancer.

With love, commitment and proper care, your pet will grow up safe and healthy and will enrich every aspect of your life. May you enjoy every moment that you share with your new best friend!
