10 Commandments
10 Commandments

1. On average, I'm expected to live 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful. Please remember that before you decide to get me.

Sophie says: Too many people think it is cool to get a dog and go get one without really thinking the process through. Human lives change over the 10 to 15 years. Please remember this when you ultimately decide to get a dog. I know how it feels when my human
leaves for what seems to be an eternity.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me. It sometimes takes time.

Sophie says: Our thought process is not as advanced as humans. Although I can dictate to my human here, I need to be told several times in a nice way what my human wants of me. My human NEVER hits me or yells. My human says, 'good girl' or lovingly pats my head when I do something he likes and 'bad girl' or 'no' when I do something he does not like. Hitting would only make me scared of my human.

3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well being. Give me time to earn it.

Sophie says: You must love me and trust me and give me the opportunity to fail. I need to be allowed to play with other dogs go to parks and socialize with other 'life forms' so I can be a better companion to you. If you don't trust me and keep me away from mental stimulation, I will have a very unhappy life and how can we be great together? Best time to start? When I'm a puppy.

4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.

Sophie says: As I stated above, our thought process is not as advanced as humans. Correct me immediately if I did something you didn't like but don't be mad at me for long because I will most likely forget what I did and will be sad if you are mad at me for a long time. Don't lock me up because it is scary and I get lonely. My human give me a 'time-out' by putting me in a corner where I have to stay for a little while. But I can see him from the corner. I'm not shut up. This has helped me to learn but it is not scary.

5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.

Sophie says: We don't understand why you have to leave to do these strange things but my human leaves for these things too. But my social life is to love my human. Sure he brings me to the park to play with other life forms but ultimately I only have my human and his family.

6. Talk to me in a nice way. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice and when you speak to me nicely, I'm much happier.

Sophie says: My human talks to me a lot. I tilt my head, happily wag my tail or curl up next to him while he watches that moving box in the corner. I love it when he speaks to me. It tells me he knows I'm there and he appreciates me. I love being appreciated!

7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.

Sophie says: If I'm treated with kindness, I will most likely be kind and happy. If you treat me with meanness by hitting me or always teasing me, I probably will become an angry and unhappy dog. I remember those who tease me and who are kind. I may forget to stay in my yard sometimes but I remember kindness.

8. I beg you not to hit me. I am not able to hit back but I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.

Sophie says: My human NEVER hits me. Thank goodness. But I can understand how some of my fellow canines will resist self-defense and 'take it' because they love their humans. They don't understand why you can't just say, 'no'. We learn from 'no' sometime even better than being hit.

9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I
might not be getting the right food, or I have been out to long, or my heart is getting to old and weak.

Sophie says: Just like you, there are times when I don't feel good. I know my human looks closely at me if I don't just up for him. He walks over to me and if I slowly lift my head and don't wag my tail, he knows I'm not up to par. He pats me on the head and sits with me. I know he is concerned and gives me more time than usual to do what he wants me to do.

10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: 'I cannot bear to watch' or 'Let it happen in my absence.' Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death.

Sophie says: My human had a hard time with his Golden Retriever a few years ago. I guess she had a stroke and could not feed herself, go to the bathroom or do anything else. When she fell asleep at the veterinarian's office for the last time, he was there lovingly patting her on the head saying, 'goodbye'. I believe he will be kind and patient when I grow old and be there for me when my time comes.

P.S. Remember that I love you.
